It's easy to get stuck in a rut when listening to music, but finding something new can be like looking for a needle in a haystack! Scribbler Lily Scholes has done the hard work so you don't have to...
CIRCA WAVES
Circa Waves were formed in Liverpool 2013. They released their debut album ‘Young Chasers’ in 2015 following up two single releases and an EP. The 13 track long album carries its own sound of pop while being a step beyond your standard top 40 pop. Their songs use many gritty guitar strums and deep drum beats; these rock backgrounds of their music is juxtaposed with an upbeat, positive sound which is bound to make you feel good. Their second album ‘Different Creatures’ is set to release on March 10th 2017. Two singles have been pre-released from their new album, ‘Wake Me Up’ and ‘Fire That Burns’. From these singles we can pre-empt that within this album their rock routes are more prominent in this album with more rich beats and guitar sounds. I am looking forward to see what is to come of Circa Waves following their new album.
SUNFLOWER BEAN
Sunflower Bean are a rock band from Brooklyn. They were signed to Fat Possum Records in 2015. Since being signed they have released 2 Ep’s ‘Show Me Your Seven Secrets’ (2015) and ‘From the Basement’ (2016). Alongside their debut album ‘Human Ceremony’ which was released in February 2016. Their sound involves grunge style tones and beats which mimic this effortless feeling as if it has been thrown together yet it has an aroma of perfectly flawless. Some of their songs have previously been recognised like ‘Tame Impala’ and ‘2013’ by NME who described them as being “astonishingly good”. The bands lead singer, Julia Cummings, adds a unique style to the band. One of which I believe to be missing in the mainstream music scene.
BOMBAY BICYCLE CLUB
Bombay Bicycle Club were formed in London 2005. Bombay Bicycle Club don’t fit into one sound or one genre; they have produced 1 EP and 4 album, all of which carry their distinct unique sound to them. ‘The Boy I Used to be’ (2007) EP follows the sound of what you would expect to hear from an indie band in the late 00’s, just by 4 songs you are completely satisfied. Move on 2 years to 2009 and they released their debut ‘I Had the Blues but I Shook Them Loose’. With this alum they continued to follow their indie pop sound but brushing more towards a rock sound reaching out to more audiences. Their next two following albums ‘Flaws’ (2010) and ‘A Different Kind Of Fix’ (2011) turn towards a more acoustic folk sound achieving that status of music that is easy listening no matter what your mood or what you are doing. Their most recent album ‘So Long, See You Tomorrow’ was released in 2014. This album stands out the most out of their music because of the complete unique sound that it carries. For a band who have experimented with indie rock and folk music I think it was a perfect decision for them to touch into world music. Out of all the albums this is the one that I believe will attract people to listen to the band the most. Bombay Bicycle Club have the ability to appeal to such a wide range of audiences and they should appreciated more in the industry.
PARK SQUARES AND ALLEYS
Singer songwriter Khavro Sergey is from Moscow, Russia, he formed a band in 2015 called Parks Squares and Alleys. Their debut album ‘Against Illusions and Reality’ was released in 2015. They have also released 2 singles ‘We’re Not Just Friends’ (2015) and ‘Parasites’ (2016). Their music has a real dreamy feel to it with mixing of genres of indie rock, psychedelic and synthpop. It isn’t very often that there is European bands blossoming in the indie music scene and more people should be listening because it is something completely different to what we hear from English and Western bands. I do hope that more European bands can blossom and branch out to different countries just as Sergey has done.
DAY WAVE
Day Wave is an indie rock band formed in Oakland, California, formed in 2015. The band consists solely of Jackson Phillips with accompanying musicians for live performances. Has released 3 singles: ‘Drag’ (2015), ‘We Try but We Don’t Fit In’ (2015), ‘Wasting Time’ (2016). As well as 2 Eps: ‘Headcase’ and ‘Hard to Read’ (2016). Most recently he has pre-released a second single ‘Something Here’ off his upcoming debut album ‘The Days We’ve Had’ which is due for release on 5th May 2017. The synthpop sound that his music carries gives him an easy listening timeless sound. Within the songs there is a distortion of Phillips voice which adds to the timeless feel of his music, it is of something that you would have heard in an older generation of music but Phillips has found a way to bring it back making it knew and fresh all over again.
BABY STRANGE
Baby Strange were formed in 2012 in Glasgow, Scotland. They have released 7 singles from 2013-2016. All singles being in their debut album ‘Want It Need It’ released in 2016. They have a real timeless grime sound in their music not shying away from strong guitar and drum sounds perfectly accompanied by rich vocals. In 2016, they supported Jamie T on his Trick album tour, this is when I began listening to them. When they play their music live you can hear the passion and the realness that they have; this is a band who are at their peak when performing on stage. I expect many thing to come for Baby Strange in the indie music industry.
